The hand consists of 27 bones (including the 8 bones in the wrist ). When the other associated structures (nerves, arteries, veins, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joint cartilage, and fingernails) are considered, the potential for a variety of injuries exists when trauma involves the hand.

Trying to treat a hand injury can end up becoming a hassle if the injury is not too harsh there are at home remedies you can try such as R.I.C.E which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

  • R=Rest as soon as the injury happens you should stop activity immediately because rest is critical for proper healing.
  • I= Ice  Apply ice for 20-30 minutes, for the first 48-72 hours, three to four times a day. Ice helps reduce swelling by constricting the blood vessels. For areas of the body like the hand, you can soak your fingers or hand in a cup of ice to ease the pain.
  • C= Compression wrapping the injured hand can help reduce swelling by limiting blood and plasma flow. Warning: Pain, numbness, cramping and blue or dusky colored nails are all signs of blood deprivation. If any of these symptoms occur remove compression bandage immediately. Once the symptoms are gone, rewrap the area less tightly.
  • E= Elevation Elevate the injured area to help drain excess fluid and further decrease swelling in the area.

If you notice that these home treatments are not working, make an appointment for hand therapy in Suffolk County at our Patchogue office.
