Treatment for TMJ in Suffolk County

What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ, is a type of condition that affects the TMJ joint in the jawline.  This hinge joint connects the lower part of the jaw to the skull, and is responsible for all natural jaw movements. The effects of this disorder are a limitation to such movements, including chewing, yawning, and opening and closing of the mouth.  The symptoms include:

  • Stiffness of the jaw
  • Jaw discomfort
  • Dizziness and headaches, which may lead to nausea and/or vomiting
  • Pain in the ear (similar to that of an ear infection)
  • Clicking or popping sound in the jaw

At Spectrum Physical Therapy, our skilled physical therapists will create exercise and stretching programs that will provide you the best treatment for your TMJ in Suffolk County.

What Causes TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint disorder has a number of causes, but poor posture and stress are the most common.  When you suffer from a high amount of stress, it may cause you to grind your teeth or clench your jaw constantly and without you even realizing.  The constant strain on the muscles surrounding the joint can lead to TMJ.  Similarly, if you have poor posture habits, like leaning your head forward while at your desk, this can put your head in an uncomfortable position.  The result is a strain on the surrounding muscles and ligaments by your TMJ joint, which causes the chewing muscles in your jaw to be overused and pain to generate.  Other causes of TMJ include:

  • Poor teeth alignment
  • Lockjaw
  • Surgery to the face and jaw
